On this solemn Yom Hazikaron, the National Jewish Assembly (NJA) pauses to honour the memory of the brave souls who have sacrificed their lives in defence of the State of Israel. This year, as we reflect on their selflessness, we mourn the tragic loss of 766 IDF soldiers who fell while serving on active duty, alongside 61 disabled veterans who have succumbed to injuries sustained in previous conflicts.
The ongoing war with Hamas has extracted a devastating toll on our brothers and sisters in Israel, claiming the lives of 716 soldiers and security force members. Among the fallen are 40 children under the age of 18 and 68 foreign nationals who stood in solidarity with Israel in its darkest hours. We also remember the 252 civilians and soldiers abducted by Hamas on October 7. Today, 128 of these souls remain in captivity, their fates uncertain.
As we gather to remember and reflect, we reaffirm our commitment to the values of freedom and security for which they fought. Their sacrifices have not only defended the Jewish state, but have also secured the liberties that Israelis cherish today. On this day of remembrance, the NJA extends its deepest sympathies to the families who bear the personal grief of loss.
Let us come together as a community and as a nation to honour their memory, their bravery, and their undying commitment to Israel. They will forever be in our hearts, remembered as the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and security.
