National Jewish Assembly Condemns Rio Cinema’s Decision to Cancel Eurovision Screening

The National Jewish Assembly (NJA) vehemently condemns the Rio Cinema’s decision to cancel its Eurovision Song Contest screening, a move that undermines the values of inclusivity, equality, and universality that the event stands for. By succumbing to pressure and boycotting the competition due to Israel’s participation, the Rio Cinema is perpetuating divisiveness and discrimination rather than fostering unity and understanding.

The NJA finds it highly ironic that in Rio Cinema’s own statement, they claim to hold the belief that music and Eurovision can bring people together, however their action in boycotting screening the festival this year due to Israel’s participation is antithetical to this belief. Put simply, for Rio Cinema it’s clear that they are happy to let music unite, except for when it includes Jews.

The Eurovision Song Contest has long served as a platform for cultural exchange and celebration, transcending borders and bringing people together from diverse backgrounds. However, the Rio Cinema’s shortsighted decision to bow to political pressure from the pro-Palestine mob deprives its patrons of the opportunity to engage with this global event and celebrate the diversity of musical talent from across Europe and beyond.

Furthermore, the Rio Cinema’s declaration of support for the pro-Palestinian cause and pro-Palestine non-profits at the expense of hosting a Eurovision screening sends a troubling message that aligns with the discriminatory campaign to delegitimise Israel’s participation in international events. It is disappointing to see a venue that claims to uphold the values of inclusivity and equality succumb to divisive rhetoric and abandon its commitment to promoting unity and understanding.

The NJA calls on the Rio Cinema to reconsider its decision and reaffirm its commitment to fostering a culture of inclusivity, diversity, and respect for all. By reinstating the Eurovision screening, the Rio Cinema has the opportunity to demonstrate its support for the core values of the competition and reject efforts to politicise cultural events for narrow ideological agendas.

As an organisation dedicated to combating discrimination and promoting dialogue, the NJA stands firmly against all forms of bigotry and intolerance. We urge the Rio Cinema to uphold the principles of inclusivity and equality by embracing the spirit of Eurovision and providing a welcoming space for all members of the community to come together and celebrate the power of music to unite humanity.
