The National Jewish Assembly (NJA) unequivocally supports the University of St Andrews’ decision to discharge Ms. Stella Maris from her roles as President of Court and charity trustee. This decision follows an independent investigation which found that Ms. Maris had made some students “fear for their safety” and breached her legal responsibilities as a Court member and charity trustee.
Ms. Maris’s refusal to accept the investigation’s conclusions and her subsequent actions on social media have inflamed tensions within the St Andrews community, causing distress and fear, particularly among Jewish students. This behaviour is unacceptable for someone in a position of leadership and responsibility.
The independent investigation, led by Morag Ross KC, concluded that Ms. Maris had exercised poor judgment by issuing a message to all 10,000 St Andrews students offering her personal opinions on the conflict in Gaza and Israel. Additionally, her social media posts were found to be discourteous and disrespectful, dismissing the fears raised by students who had contacted her seeking reassurance. Despite extensive efforts to resolve the issue through dialogue and mediation, Ms. Maris repeatedly refused to acknowledge her breaches of responsibility, leaving the University with no choice but to discharge her from her administrative roles.
Laurence Julius, NJA Vice-Chairman, stated, “The decision by the University of St Andrews to discharge Ms. Maris is both necessary and justified. Her actions have created an unsafe environment for students, particularly those of the Jewish faith, and it is imperative that leaders are held accountable to maintain the integrity and safety of the academic community.”
The NJA also expresses concern over the growing tolerance of pro-Palestine and pro-Hamas encampments and activism on university campuses. Such activities endanger Jewish and pro-Israel students and compromise the integrity of educational institutions. It is essential for universities to ensure a safe and respectful environment for all students, free from intimidation and hostility.
The NJA commends the University for upholding the standards of courtesy, respect, and responsibility expected of its leaders. The decision reinforces the importance of maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all students, regardless of their background or beliefs.
We hope this decision serves as a reminder that leadership comes with responsibilities, and those in positions of power must be held accountable for their actions. The NJA will continue to support efforts that promote peace, tolerance, and understanding within educational institutions and beyond.
