The National Jewish Assembly (NJA) is proud to announce the success of its recent online event, “Why Centrism is the Answer to Extremism and Polarisation,” featuring esteemed political commentator Yair Zivan. The event, which attracted a diverse audience from across the globe, focused on the growing need for centrism in today’s fractured political climate. Zivan, author of the acclaimed book The Centre Must Hold, delivered an engaging and thought-provoking discussion on how political centrism offers the best way to counter rising extremism and divisive populism.
Zivan, who currently serves as the media advisor to Israel’s opposition leader Yair Lapid, shared his personal experiences and insights into how centrism can restore balance in politics. “Extremists are not people with ideas we find uncomfortable. They are people who want to break down the system and tear apart the foundations that keep our democracies going,” Zivan explained. He continued, “Centrists are committed to liberal democracy as the best form of government we have.”
During the event, Zivan highlighted the dangers posed by both the far left and the far right, noting that neither extreme can provide a sustainable solution to the challenges facing modern democracies. “The answer to extremism cannot come from the opposite extreme,” Zivan emphasised, adding that, “A strong, confident, and passionate political centre is the only way to counter these dangerous trends.”
Steve Winston, Managing Director of the NJA, praised the event for shedding light on the importance of centrism in combating the rise of political division. “Zivan’s insights resonated deeply with the audience, offering practical solutions to the challenges of extremism and polarisation,” Winston remarked.
