The NJA welcomes reports that the Labour party is considering dropping a commitment to immediately recognise a Palestinian state in its upcoming general election manifesto.
Such a commitment is blind to the political, geographical, and practical realities that define the conflict.
Moreover, this policy does nothing to contribute towards peace in the Middle East, and instead tries to award a tokenistic point to Palestinian leadership – which, as it currently stands, is comprised of the corrupt and anti-democratic Palestinian Authority, and the proscribed terrorist organisation, Hamas.
Labour would do well to drop this commitment altogether – not only in its general election manifesto – and instead redirect its efforts to encourage Palestinian leaders to commit to educating their people towards acceptance and coexistence with Israel.
