The National Jewish Assembly (NJA) held a thought-provoking and timely event on November 12, 2024, titled “Israel & The Fight for Civilisation,” featuring prominent voices Brendan O’Neill, Editor at Large of Spiked and Spectator columnist, in conversation with Jonathan Sacerdoti, UK correspondent for i24 News.
With an audience of over 230 attendees, the evening delved into some of the most pressing and often overlooked ideological battles of our time, exploring the profound challenges facing Israel, the Jewish community, and the broader civilisation.
O’Neill delivered a powerful critique, calling the global response to October 7 “a moral test to the world—and we failed.” He spoke about the “allure of barbarism” and the insidiousness of concepts like “Holocaust envy” and “anti-civilisational delirium,” pointing to a disturbing cultural shift where historical truths are being subverted. He noted that the Jews’ unique experience of suffering is even being appropriated by the activist class, eroding understanding and respect for historical victimisation.
Sacerdoti added depth to the conversation by addressing how terms like “genocide” have become dangerously charged, warping public discourse, and raised the challenge of amplifying the “silent majority” in a society where the “megaphones” are often held by those who oppose civilisational values.
Gary Mond, Chairman of the NJA, stated, “This event served as a crucial reminder that the fight for civilisation is not just Israel’s burden but a shared responsibility for all who value truth, history, and moral clarity. Brendan and Jonathan brought exceptional depth and insight to a conversation that too often goes unheard.”
O’Nell also explored how to uphold free speech while navigating the thin line between open discourse and subtle forms of censorship. As Brendan remarked, “fighting hate speech with more enlightened speech” may be one of the key strategies in this battle for civilisation.
The NJA extends its heartfelt thanks to both speakers for their insightful and courageous discussion, and to the audience for their active participation.
The NJA invites its members and supports to join these critical discussions, which are advertised at: www.nja.org.uk/upcoming-events
