Sadiq Khan’s Eid Message: Moral Theatre from a Mayor Missing in Action

The National Jewish Assembly today condemned London Mayor Sadiq Khan for issuing what can only be described as a moral pantomime disguised as an Eid message – complete with unverifiable Hamas talking points, selective outrage, and zero mention of the more than 100 Israeli hostages still languishing in Gaza.

In his remarks, Khan claimed that “more than 50,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza,” including “15,000 children” – figures supplied uncritically by a terrorist-run regime without context, verification, or any mention of the October 7th massacre perpetrated by Hamas. Nor did he acknowledge the murder, rape and torture of Israeli civilians. Nor did he utter a single word about the Jews taken hostage or the daily rocket attacks that continue to target Israeli civilians.

This is not the balanced language of a statesman – it’s the calculated messaging of someone more concerned with pandering to a radicalised electoral base than uniting a fracturing city. A Mayor for all Londoners? That would be nice. Instead, we have a Mayor who seems to think his job is international advocacy on behalf of Hamas sympathisers, while antisemitic hate marches clog the streets of the capital week after week.

NJA Chair Gary Mond said: “Mayor Khan has become the poster child for the modern progressive politician: silent on antisemitism, soft on extremism, and perpetually loud when it comes to demonising Israel. His message this week was not a call for peace, but a green light to the radical fringe. London deserves better leadership than this shallow virtue-signalling while the city crumbles under his watch.”

If Sadiq Khan spent half as much time protecting Jewish communities, or even tackling knife crime, rampant phone thefts, broken public transport, endless strikes, spiralling antisemitism, pro-Hamas marches every weekend, soaring housing costs, demoralised police, unchecked gang violence, cleaning up his city as he does moralising on Gaza, perhaps Londoners would feel like their capital hadn’t been turned into a dystopian grievance theatre.
