NJA Condemns Venue’s Shameful Cancellation of Benny Friedman Concert

The National Jewish Assembly (NJA) strongly condemns the appalling decision by a London venue to cancel the scheduled concert of Hassidic singer Benny Friedman, citing so-called “security concerns” just one day before the event. This blatant capitulation is a manifestation of the rising antisemitism that continues to plague the UK and a troubling attempt to suppress Jewish cultural expression.

Benny Friedman, one of the world’s most celebrated Hassidic singers, was due to perform a concert in London to bring joy, unity, and inspiration to the Jewish community. Instead, the venue surrendered to external pressure, targeting a Jewish artist whose sole “offence” is his public solidarity with the Jewish state and its people. This disgraceful decision denies Jewish audiences their right to cultural celebration and undermines the values of freedom and diversity.

Gary Mond, Chairman of the NJA, said: “This is an egregious example of antisemitic discrimination hiding behind the veil of ‘security concerns.’ Cancelling a Jewish artist’s performance sends an appalling message that Jewish cultural expression is unwelcome in the UK. Venues must show moral courage and stand firm against intimidation.”

Laurence Julius, Vice Chairman of the NJA, added: “The venue’s excuses are entirely unconvincing. By giving in to these pressures, they embolden those who seek to spread hatred and division. This kind of cowardice is unacceptable and must be firmly opposed, as it establishes an unacceptable precedent which if unabated leads to a normalisation of cancel culture in the arts.”

The NJA stands in full solidarity with Benny Friedman, the show’s organisers, and all those working tirelessly to ensure this event can still proceed. We commend their determination to secure an alternative venue and their refusal to let this shameful episode succeed in silencing Jewish identity and culture.

The UK government must act decisively to combat this wave of antisemitic intimidation and ensure that Jewish performers and cultural events are protected. Venues must not yield to those who aim to divide society and undermine fundamental freedoms.
