On Thursday, 12th December, the National Jewish Assembly (NJA) proudly hosted an exclusive Zoom event featuring Vahid Beheshti, a renowned Iranian human rights advocate and independent journalist. This insightful conversation focused on the existential threat posed by the Islamic Republic of Iran to Israel and Western democracy, drawing attention to the urgent need for action against the regime’s destabilising activities.
Vahid Beheshti, who completed a courageous 72-day hunger strike earlier this year outside the UK Foreign Office, has become a powerful voice in the fight to proscribe Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation. His efforts have been instrumental in raising awareness of Iran’s dangerous expansionism and its direct threat to the stability of the Middle East and the democratic world.
The event shed light on Vahid’s incredible journey, including his impactful address to the Knesset, where he voiced his unwavering support for Israel in its struggle against Iran’s malign influence. Beheshti also shared his ongoing efforts to hold the UK government accountable for its stance on the IRGC, underscoring the dire consequences of inaction in the face of such an existential threat.
NJA Chairman Gary Mond commented: “Tonight’s event showcased the bravery and tenacity of a man who has sacrificed so much in the name of justice and human rights. Vahid Beheshti’s call to action is one we cannot ignore – the IRGC’s presence is not just a threat to Israel but to the very fabric of Western democracy.”
NJA Advisory Board Member Sandra Dangoor added: “This discussion reaffirmed the importance of standing with Israel and all those who oppose the Iranian regime’s terror networks. It is imperative that the UK and its allies take decisive action now.”
The NJA extends its gratitude to all participants who contributed to the lively Q&A session, demonstrating the community’s commitment to combating the IRGC’s influence and supporting democratic values.
