The National Jewish Assembly (NJA) proudly hosted an engaging and thought-provoking online event on 7th November titled “The Lies & Lawfare Against Israel” as part of its NJA Zoom Speaker Series. The event featured a robust conversation between Major (Ret.) Andrew Fox, a former paratrooper and current research fellow at the Henry Jackson Society, and Jonathan Sacerdoti, respected broadcaster, journalist, and UK correspondent for i24. Together, they unpacked the complex and critical issues surrounding the misuse of legal systems to delegitimise Israel on the global stage.
Major Fox, an expert in Middle Eastern affairs, defence, and disinformation, provided an in-depth analysis of the tactics used by anti-Israel activists to wage “lawfare” – the use of legal tools and international institutions as political weapons. Sacerdoti, known for his incisive commentary and expertise, further enriched the discussion by offering insights into the role of media and NGOs in distorting narratives around Israel’s actions.
The event examined the myriad ways UN institutions and the International Criminal Court (ICC), are used to target Israeli leaders with unfounded accusations, casting Israel in a negative light despite its adherence to high moral standards in warfare. Major Fox highlighted recent ICC actions and the strategic manipulation of legal tools by NGOs, framing these as coordinated efforts to undermine Israel’s legitimacy rather than a genuine pursuit of justice.
“This discussion was a vital opportunity for our community to understand how ‘lawfare’ distorts reality and obscures the truth,” stated Gary Mond, Chairman of the NJA. “These legal and political attacks, dressed as humanitarian concerns, are dangerous and impact the safety and security of Israel and Jewish communities worldwide. Events like these are crucial for equipping our community with knowledge to challenge such misinformation.”
With a strong turnout and active participation, attendees expressed appreciation for the clarity and depth provided by Fox and Sacerdoti. The NJA remains committed to hosting informative discussions that empower the Jewish community to counter bias and misinformation. Following this successful event, the NJA will continue to address topics critical to Israel’s security and British Jewry, fostering awareness and resilience within the community.
