The National Jewish Assembly (NJA) welcomes the Government’s decision to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) under the National Security (State Threats) Act.
For years, the NJA, together with other groups, has argued that the IRGC poses a direct threat not only to the Jewish community but to Britain’s national security. Through its support for Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis and other terrorist proxies, together with Iranian-linked plots and hostile activity within the UK, the case for decisive action has been overwhelming.
While the Government has chosen a different legal mechanism from proscription under the Terrorism Act 2000, the new designation regime is intended to deliver substantially equivalent criminal offences and enforcement powers against hostile state organisations such as the IRGC. Most importantly, the IRGC can no longer operate with the legal ambiguity that has existed until now.
The NJA is proud to have played its part in building parliamentary support for this outcome.
In February 2026, working with We Believe In Israel,, we organised a House of Lords briefing bringing together Peers, MPs and legal experts to examine the legal and national security case for action against the IRGC. That briefing was followed by the House of Lords voting in favour of proscribing the IRGC, demonstrating clear parliamentary support for stronger measures.
Alongside this, thousands of our members and supporters took part in our Email Your MP campaign and signed our petition, ensuring that MPs continued to hear directly from constituents calling for action. We thank everyone who participated. Public engagement matters, and this outcome demonstrates that sustained parliamentary and public pressure can help shape Government policy.
This announcement represents an important milestone, but it must now be followed by robust enforcement. The Government must use these new powers to investigate, disrupt and prosecute those acting on behalf of the IRGC, ensuring that its networks and supporters cannot operate freely in the United Kingdom.
The NJA’s work does not end here.
Alongside our campaign against the IRGC, we have consistently called for decisive action against the Muslim Brotherhood. While today’s announcement marks an important step forward against one of the principal threats we identified, our campaign for action against the Muslim Brotherhood operating in Britain will continue.
Today’s announcement is therefore not the end of the campaign. It is proof that sustained public engagement, parliamentary advocacy and determined campaigning can achieve meaningful change. We thank every member, supporter and parliamentarian who helped bring us to this point.
