Statement from the National Jewish Assembly on the UK’s Recognition of Palestine

The National Jewish Assembly condemns Sir Keir Starmer’s shameful and dangerous decision to recognise a Palestinian state.

This is not diplomacy – it is the rewarding of terrorism.

Gaza is ruled by Hamas, an Islamist terror organisation whose 1988 charter and deology openly call for the destruction of Israel and Jews worldwide, framing the conflict as a religious duty until Judgment Day. Meanwhile, the West Bank is under the Palestinian Authority, led by Mahmoud Abbas – a Holocaust denier elected in 2005 for a four-year term that expired in 2009, yet still clinging to office more than 16 years beyond his mandate. Although Abbas formally condemned Hamas’s October 7th massacre, his regime continues to glorify terror and incentivise it through “pay for slay” stipends to convicted terrorists and their families.

To even consider these factions valid partners for statehood is an insult to both democracy and morality.

At this very moment, 48 Israeli hostages remain in Hamas’s tunnels, with at least half believed dead.

And yet the Labour leadership chooses to hand Hamas and its allies a diplomatic victory.

The majority of the British public, according to polling, do not agree with the timing of this recognition. Sir Keir has ignored them and instead sided with appeasement.

Recognition at this time sends a devastating message: that terror, mass murder, and hostage-taking can bring political gains. It undermines every effort to build a genuine peace, strengthens the hand of extremists, and weakens the position of moderates across the region.

This recognition betrays Britain’s values, undermines its credibility, and endangers Jewish communities at home and abroad. Sir Keir Starmer has shown weakness where strength was required, and in doing so has betrayed Britain’s allies and shamed his office.
